Senior Technical Advisor at the Finance Ministry, Dr Samuel Nii Noi Ashong, has said statutory tax collection body, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is currently undergoing restructuring to ramp up its tax mobilization efforts.
Speaking as a panelist on the 4th edition of Media General’s Economic Dialogue series on the theme: Ghana’s Recovery Path in 2021 – Balancing Fiscal Consolidation With Growth Policies, Dr Ashong noted the restructuring process is being carried out in the areas of tax administration, tax automation, tax collections among others.
Adding the usage of the Ghana Card PIN which replaces the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) effective April 1, 2021, as being part of the restructuring process of the GRA.
“And all of the restructuring process are to ensure that the country increases its tax revenue to GDP and achieve the tax revenue target of 20 percent of GDP as opined by the Finance Minister,” he said.
In the common goal of increasing tax revenue to GDP, former Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper, who also sat in the dialogue as a panelist, suggested that the GRA look at taxing the new economy like construction in the services sector to increase its revenue mobilisation as such sectors are rapidly expanding.
