Colonel (Rtd) Kwadwo Damoah, Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has accused importers of making under-declarations of goods imported into the country.
According to the Commissioner, most importers do not declare the true costs of goods imported in a bid to decrease costs involved in clearing goods from the ports.
He also noted that, some importers go to clear their goods in neighbouring countries like Togo to evade tax.
“Most importers under-declare the cost of their goods because they want to beat the customs. They give false descriptions of their goods in order not to pay high clearing costs. Some importers also go to clear their goods in neighbouring countries like Togo to evade tax,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Onua FM.
“But you see, all these things are not helpful to the importers themselves as well as the nation, so importers should be truthful about the costs of goods imported into the country and stop under-declaring their goods,” he added.
