The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS), have denied reports by the media that the AstraZeneca and Sputnik V vaccines are ineffective against India’s deadly Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, June 22, the MoH and GHS described the media publications as untrue asserting studies conducted by the Gamaleya Center and the Public Health England (PHE) indicate that two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine for instance, is very effective against the Delta variant.
“According to Public Health England (PHE) two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine are highly effective against hospitalisation due to the Delta variant and showed no deaths among those vaccinated. The data also suggest that the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective against symptomatic disease caused by the Delta variant,” the statement noted.
“A study conducted by Gamaleya Center suggests that, Sputnik-V is more efficient against the Delta variant of coronavirus, first detected in India, compared to other COVID-19 vaccines,” added the statement.
The MoH and GHS, further in the statement averred only six cases of the Delta variant have been detected in Ghana from all samples taken between April and June, 2021 from the various points of entry.
Adding that those that have tested positive have been put under mandatory isolation.
