Independent Power Producers (IPPS) have for some time now been clamouring for the payment of some $1.4 billion debt owed them by the State.
IPPs have on several occasions noted that, they will not be able to guarantee power supply to State-owned power distribution company, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), should Government fail to redeem its debts.
In a statement issued and signed by Elikplim Kwablah Apetorgbor, CEO of the Chamber of Independent Power Producers and Bulk Consumers (CIPDiB) in July this year, Mr Apetorgbor said, Government’s cumulative indebtedness to them is compelling them to contract costly loans to sustain their generations.
Adding the situation is grim and that there is a real danger of IPPs shutting down their plants if the situation was not resolved in the immediate term.
Well, IPPs seem to be on the verge of carrying out their threat as Mr Apetorgbor in a recent media engagement, noted that IPPs can no longer guarantee power supply as it plans to shutdown its plants to cut power supply to the country.
Mr Apetorgbor speaking to the media, noted that he cannot give timelines as to when IPPs are going to shutdown their plants to cut power supply but it is going to be soon if Government does not quickly pay debts owed IPPs.
“I can’t give timelines as to when IPPs are going to shutdown their plants to cut power supply, but what I can say is that they are going to do it and it will be soon, it can even be from today,” he stated.
